DESCRIPTION:The Overfield Tavern Museum will be hosting a Family Archaeology Day on Sunday\, October 12th\, from 1-4 p.m.\nThe museum has hired the Columbus-based firm Ohio Valley Archaeology\, Inc. to conduct intensive excavations at the museum site\, both in the backyard and under the floorboards of the 1808 log tavern\, in advance of upcoming restoration work necessitated by the fire of December 7\, 2024. \nThe public is invited to see the work in progress\, talk to real archaeologists\, and watch them uncover artifacts buried for more than 200 years. There will also be a variety of hands-on activities for young and old alike\, including a kid-friendly dig. This free\, family-friendly event will begin with a ceremony at 11 am to dedicate a new state historical marker commemorating Ohio’s Black Civil War soldiers. The marker and ceremony\, sponsored by the City of Troy’s Human Relations Commission\, will take place at Soldier’s Circle at Riverside Cemetery in Troy. More than 20 Black Civil War soldiers are buried at the cemetery. \nAt 1 pm\, the Miami Valley Veterans Museum will host a dedication ceremony for their new diorama honoring the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment\, one of the first all-Black regiments in the Union Army during the Civil War. More than 150 men from the Miami Valley volunteered to serve in the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Regiments. The Miami Valley Veterans Museum\, located at 2245 S. County Road 25A\, is open that day from 12-4 pm. \nA variety of Civil War-themed activities will also take place from 1 to 4 pm at the First Presbyterian Church at 20 S. Walnut Street in Troy. Displays and activities will include reenactors from the Stillwater Civil War Roundtable\, book signing by local historian Martin Stewart (author of Redemption: The 71st Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War)\, tours of the church’s Underground Railroad artifacts and tunnel\, activities for kids\, and free samples of hardtack and chicory coffee. The Troy Historical Society will have Civil War memorabilia on display and will be selling copies of the out-of-print book Troy: The Nineteenth Century by Thomas B. Wheeler. The Local History and Genealogy Center will have authentic Civil War artifacts\, letters\, and journals on display at the event\, and visitors will have the opportunity to create their own journal. \nAt 2 pm\, a free benefit concert performed by Civil War musicians Steve and Lisa Ball and the 73rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Band will take place at the First Presbyterian Church. Steve and Lisa Ball are musicians from Columbus\, Ohio\, who specialize in the music of the Civil War and the music and life of Stephen Foster. The 73rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Band was formed in 2012 by founder and bandmaster John Huffman\, Jr. Huffman is a 34-year veteran of the Ohio National Guard and was the Enlisted Bandmaster of the 122nd US Army Band while in the National Guard. The 73rd OVI Band uses actual Civil War-era brass instruments and performs in Union uniforms with correct reproduction Civil War music stands. \nAt 4 pm\, Abraham Lincoln impersonator John Cooper will give a first-person performance about the life and times of the 16th President. Cooper has been portraying Lincoln for more than 25 years\, performing at the Ohio State Fair\, numerous county fairs and festivals\, political dinners\, and schools all across Ohio. \n \nAt 5 pm\, a walking tour of historic sites in downtown Troy associated with the Civil War and the Underground Railroad will begin at the First Presbyterian Church. The tour will last about an hour and will include a stop at the Museum of Troy History\, which has an exhibit of Civil War artifacts on display. The museum will also be open that day from 1-5 pm. \nAll events are free and open to the public. Donations to the Overfield Tavern Museum’s Fire Recovery Fund are encouraged and gratefully accepted.

SUMMARY:Drawing Room Chamber Concert with Jim McCutcheon\, guitar
DESCRIPTION:Jim is a pillar in the music community in our region. To understand Jim McCutcheon and the impact that he has had\, one first needs to understand how many musical pots he stirs. Jim is the owner of McCutcheon Music which is a 30 + year old\, Centerville based\, music store providing lessons\, rentals and repairs. Since 1978 he has taught at the University of Dayton. He is now their Senior Lecturer in guitar. He is also an adjunct professor at Wright State University School of Fine and Performing Arts and he teaches guitar at Miami University. \nHe produces a weekly radio program on Discover Classical Radio called\, “The Intimate Guitar” because\, he says\, “It is the instrument held closest to the heart.” \nHe has produced five solo recordings and in his 50 + year career he has performed countless television\, radio and live concert appearances\, including many times at the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center. \nHe is and has always been active in teaching music to young people through lessons\, school assembly programs\, residencies and arts integration programs such as Muse Machine and Montgomery County Culture Works. He has written several method books for guitar instruction which specialize in teaching guitar to young children for which he was awarded the 2017 Ohio Governor’s Award for the Arts in Arts Education. \nJim McCutcheon has been given many distinguished awards and honors over the years. He was awarded a University of Dayton “Outstanding Contributions” award. He was the first recipient of the WSU Music Department Distinguished Alumni Award for his achievements as a musician\, music teacher\, and arts advocate. He also received the 1992 WSU School of Graduate Studies Outstanding Alumni Award. He received a Parents’ Choice Foundation Silver Award for his CD “A Day with the Guitar Man\,” and he received the Muse Machine’s Prism Award. \nJim will be the featured artist for Hayner’s April 29 Drawing Room Chamber Concert. “We are so proud to have Jim with us this year\,” says Terrilynn Meece of the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center. “In his classical guitar you will hear the many decades of service and devotion to music that he built his life on. You will hear his ‘intimate guitar’ and experience his deep understanding of the mysteries of music. This concert will be a very special way to end the season.”
